The G.A.R. Building Detroit

The Grand Army of the Republic

The G.A.R. building was purchased by the media production firm Mindfield from the City of Detroit in November, 2011. Mindfield has started renovating the G.A.R., with opening slated for November 2014. Mindfield plans to occupy the top two floors itself, lease the ground floor for 2 restaurants, and dedicate a memorial to Civil War Veterans.

The G.A.R. Building was designed by architect Julian Hess, and constructed at 1942 West Grand River and Cass as an appropriate structure for meetings and other G.A.R. related activities. The original construction cost was split between the Grand Army of the Republic (who paid $6000 of the cost) and the city of Detroit (who paid the remainder of the $44,000 total cost). Construction commenced in 1897 on the five-story building.

  2. We could possibly be interested in retail space when it becomes available. Very excited to see beautiful renovations like this happening!!

  3. Do you know when the restaurants will be opening? Very excited to check the place out!

    • Hello Susan, We too are very excited about welcoming people into the G A R. Our target date for the opening of Republic is January 30, 2015 for lunch. Parks and Rec Diner will open shortly thereafter.

      • Hi. I haven’t heard any recent news about Republic’s opening date. We’d love to come check it out as soon as we can.

  4. A few years ago I noticed the G.A.R. building was listed as ‘THREATENED’ by editors of Preservation magazine (National trust for historic preservation). They would be thrilled to see what you’ve done and would most likely list it as ”SAVED’ in a future article. They may possibly do an article about this building if you contact them. Great building, great job. I always seek out the G.A.R. building whenever I’m in Detroit.

  5. Hey are the restaurants open yet? I heard Jan. 30 was a tentative date but did Republic actually open? How is Parks & Rec coming along?

  6. This is very cool. I was a project manager on the Canfield Lofts back in the late 90’s in Midtown and drove past the GAR many days and wondered what was in side. I would spend my lunch breaks driving around Downtown looking at old buildings and thinking about all the cool things that could be done. It’s so great to see many of those same buildings being reborn again! Congratulations on an amazing job. I look forward to seeing what you do with the rest of the building!

  7. hey, who is this Tom Anderson?Sounds like he has his hand on the pulse of Detroit!!

  8. Hi! I am doing photo shoots for a charity calendar to raise money for children’s abuse in the area. I need a place to shoot the January page. Do you allow people in for that kind of thing? We are scheduled to do it on Monday, July 13th.

  9. Somehow, this page was on my computer this morning. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey of renewing this great building. I used to think, gee this beautiful castle needs a bath, and what a difference it made. Have enjoyed an evening at the Republic and delish breakfasts at the Parks and Rec…a coffee mug recently made it’s way to the now retired Parks and Rec director in Kalamazoo. Thanks you for the loving restoration, and btw, I LOVE that green….one of my favorite greens on the palette.

  10. Next time I return to Detroit I’m planning on visiting this wonderful building. My Great Grandfather Frederick Roland Bruner was a proud member of the Fairbanks Post # 17 and after working his way up through the ranks he became the Post Commander in 1914. I have a photo of him in his G.A.R. uniform .
