The G.A.R. Building Detroit

The Grand Army of the Republic

ANYONE OUT THERE?

We’ve had a few inquiries get lost on this site as people have reached out wanting information on the event space at the Grand Army Building.  Here goes…
Beautiful Windows Main Room Sep 23
In 2016 we completed what would become “Castle Hall” on the second level of the G.A.R. here in Detroit.  The spaces were originally meeting rooms for the veterans of the Civil War and then used for various classes when this was a Parks and Rec Center.  With the Republic Tavern on the first level we thought what better place to offer up for weddings and special occasions than this.

You’ll see from the photos that it’s cleaned up well and already being put to good use.

The G.A.R. building was purchased by the media production firm Mindfield from the City of Detroit in November, 2011. Mindfield has started renovating the G.A.R., with opening slated for November 2014. Mindfield plans to occupy the top two floors itself, lease the ground floor for 2 restaurants, and dedicate a memorial to Civil War Veterans. The G.A.R. Building was designed by architect Julian Hess, and constructed at 1942 West Grand River and Cass as an appropriate structure for meetings and other G.A.R. related activities. The original construction cost was split between the Grand Army of the Republic (who paid $6000 of the cost) and the city of Detroit (who paid the remainder of the $44,000 total cost). Construction commenced in 1897 on the five-story building.

  5. I wish I had an event to host in this building!!… I work across the way ( DTE) and fell in Love with the GAR building from the outside years ago.. Thank you for letting me see some of the inside!

  6. As a Son Of The Union Veterans Of The Civil War and a member of Co. A 14th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 3rd. Military District, Sons Of Veterans Reserve, it is very heart warming to see that the Detroit G.A.R. building has been restored and is now being used appropriately. I’m confident that G.A.R. members would be pleased. I, as a members of the S.U.V.C.W. which today represents the interests of the G.A.R., is very much pleased.

  7. Hello, It is good to receive an update from you folks….I have missed the emails. The G.A.R. building is so beautiful. Please keep the good news coming….
